Eternally shrouded in complete mystery and anonymity, the entity calling themselves Toadliquor has returned with its first recorded offerings in over 25 years.

Violently bleeding out into the early-90s with their lone LP Feel My Hate – The Power Is The Weight – R.I.P. Cain, Toadliquor followed that with a few comp tracks and a single before completely disappearing into the ether. Southern Lord compiled most known recordings in 2003 on the Hortators Lament compact disc. Then, on the occasion of the label’s 20th anniversary in 2018, Southern Lord released these recordings plus one newly received cryptic distress signal from Deep Space on the limited edition 2xLP set Cease & Decease.

And now, in 2024, Toadliquor return, to continue their decades-long onslaught of desolation, despair, and damaged vocal cords with Back in the Hole. Seven prize picks for the communal trough. Strap in and feed.

On LP and digital formats only. For fans with a penchant for pain, misery, and destruction.

†THE LORD† & MARTHE COLLABORATE ON TWO NEW TRACKS

Following on from Marthe‘s incendiary debut Southern Lord full-length Further In Evil, released this October, she now teams up with †The Lord† (Greg Anderson) to release two brand new collaborative tracks, “The Eye Of Destiny” and “Wisps of the Black Serpent.”

Marzia (AKA MARTHE) comments on this collaboration:

“Collaborating with The Lord was an exciting challenge, and something new, and stimulating to me. I don’t usually deal with such soundscapes and when Greg asked me to add vocals and drums to “The Eye of Destiny”, I accepted. The track was intended by Greg to be a tribute to Quorthon (Bathory), an artist who has been a huge influence on my moods. I had started to add in battle-drum beats, but soon faced the hard task of using words to describe what (to me) is the most talented artist of all time. How to contribute in words what I can’t even process in emotions?

There’s the person behind it, and along with the talent there’s the reality of the loss, since he’s not here anymore to witness the legacy of his sound. What’s left of his feelings on his blog, his emotions, his development as an artist and as a person and that spark in his eyes. The eyes are the mirror of the soul, we say. And I was reading some notes he left on a letter and it went something like “may the eye of destiny be wild with you and show you the right way through life”. “The Eye of destiny” was an evocative image to me, to picture in my mind the aura of his memory, as a human being and a musical genius. As words are dominant in a tribute, it was impossible, in the most humble way, to find words for him. So, I took his own words: checked all the lyrics and made a caviardage of words that in the end composed a tribute in what I considered the most honorable way possible. I love the final result, it’s my small tribute to a musical giant.

For the second song, “Wisps of the Black Serpent”, I wanted to incorporate more synths, since lately I’ve been getting into soundtracks and especially horror music composition (following from my love of horror movies, especially Gothic Italian classics). The vocals here are an improvisation. I wanted to let out some negative energies, so I imagined a shamanic exorcism to get rid of the weight I was feeling that night. I love when songs sound more like a lament than actual songs, because I can remember the exact moment something unplanned came out, which fuels the next one and the next and so on.

In celebration of Bandcamp Friday, †The Lord† (Greg Anderson of Southern Lord Recordings, Sunn O))), Engine Kid, Goatsnake & more) and Daniel Kubinski (vocalist of Die Kreuzen & The Crosses) have released their haunting collaborative track, “Palliare.” Long circling each other with reverence, Anderson and Kubinski teamed up to track guitars and vocals for the song late last year; the former recorded with Brad Wood at Sea Grass and the latter at Howl Street Studios. The end result is nothing short of venomous, with caustic, corrosive vocals and massive, monolithic guitar. The “Palliare” composition itself was inspired by “an empathetic attempt to interpret the despair of someone in palliative care,” comments †the Lord†.

Daniel Kubinski comments on the track: “The lyrics for ‘Pallaire’ were actually written in 2016 when the first line up of The Crosses were writing songs for an original LP. The lyrics were for a song entitled ‘Goner’ which was kind of a noisy, lightning speed, crazy song that sounded somewhat like the Birthday Party if they had written a hardcore song. I had always liked the lyrics so when the Crosses split up in 2017 (the first inception of the group) I held on to the lyrics hoping to use them for something else down the road.”

He continues, “In 2022 Sunn O))) guitarist and Southern Lord founder Greg Anderson approached me and invited me to sing on one of his songs for his project, The Lord. The first time I heard the song Greg sent me, I immediately remembered the Goner lyrics and thought they might work for the song, they were a perfect fit! I am so proud to be part of The Lord family and that Greg and Southern Lord believed in me to come up with the goods.”

†The Lord† adds: “I’ve been a massive fan of Daniel Kubinski ever since I heard his caustic vocals in Die Kreuzen circa 1985. While the musical direction of Die Kreuzen changed drastically over the years, it was always anchored by Daniels’ unique, innovative vocal style. Massive respect to him for simultaneously blazing a unique path and breaking new ground. I finally got to meet Daniel when Sunn O))) played with his current band, The Crosses, in Milwaukee at the Turner Ballroom. I was equally blown away by his performance that evening as well as his humility and kindness.”

Further In Evil is the debut full-length from one-woman metal band, Marthe. An atmospheric and aggressive blend of punk, Further In Evil is a shift in gears from her musical background in the anarcho-punk scene and inspired by riot grrrl, crust, and d-beat. The lyrics are full of rage and the music is full of strength; it has the power of Bathory and the sadness of Tiamat, tinged with the stench of Amebix.

Marthe is, at heart, a solo bedroom project— born out of introversion and a desire to explore new horizons and landscapes alone. “Around 2012, I started feeling the need to express myself in a heavier and more atmospheric way,” explains Marzia, the woman behind the Marthe project. “I coincidentally started hiking more and more… getting closer to lonely soundscapes: my life, feelings, and moods started being more introspective and introverted.” She continues, “Marthe suddenly became my comfort zone, my therapy, my shadow of loneliness, my book of truths, my mirror, my alter ego. Locking the door and disappearing in darkness recording music alone became something so powerful… I probably never really met myself before that.”

Further In Evil was composed and demoed over the course of a year during drives or hikes and, fatefully, the first look at the album– its title track–showcases the grandeur of Marthe‘s surroundings. Self-filmed and edited between Italy and Iceland, the “Further In Evil” video boasts the beauty of nature contrasted by Marthe‘s devastating sounds.

A video for the new single from one-woman metal band, Marthe, is now unleashed!

Of the single, Marthe comments: “‘To ruined altars you light no light’ is a popular Italian saying that means ‘wasting time on useless people or causes.’ I manipulated the sentence a bit in order to have an aesthetic sense; it means don’t waste candles or flowers on a broken or damaged altar since it won’t bring any benefit because of its condition. It also refers historically, for example, to women that can’t have kids anymore to point out that any kind of love, commitment, or engagement won’t result in having kids which was crucial to the family legacy in past ages. In general, it refers to anyone that feels trashed by someone that used to praise you before and then just lost interest.” She continues, “‘my memories are dark books you burnt while walking away’ refers to losing love for places or situations when the people you used to enjoy them with are no longer there, so your memories are ruined forever and there’s nothing you can do about it. Sense of loss will prevail and all you live after it is haunted by the lost memory of gone days.”

Further In Evil is the debut full length from one-woman metal band, Marthe, which is due via Southern Lord on October 20th. An atmospheric and aggressive blend of punk, Further In Evil is a shift in gears from her musical background in the anarcho-punk scene and inspired by riot grrrl, crust and d-beat. The lyrics are full of rage and the music is full of strength; it has the power of Bathory and the sadness of Tiamat, tinged with the stench of Amebix.

Self-filmed and edited between Italy and Iceland, the “Further In Evil” video boasts the beauty of nature contrasted by Marthe’s devastating sounds

The narrative of Further In Evil is “a journey into evil. I consider it an epiphany in growing armor to make myself stronger. The title means entering the gates of darkness, becoming cold and detached so as not to suffer anymore,” she comments. The source of many of the lyrics comes from a place of betrayal, and grief at losing “people who were central to me.” She comments, “we are alone”, but expels it as a statement of empowerment, rather than sadness – “the strength is ours.” As well as being introspective, Marthe’s lyrics look outwards at “contexts of injustice and suffering, when the main feeling is not having a voice.” Marthe’s music takes influence from other non-musical media as well – she cites the mood, atmosphere and colors of old school Italian horror movies, and continually comes back to nature as a source of inspiration.

Marthe has long been a self-sufficient and introspective voice in metal and punk, and further cements that with the release of Further In Evil on October 20th on Southern Lord.

“Further In Evil” is the name of the debut full length from one-woman metal band, Marthe, which is due via Southern Lord on 20th October. An atmospheric and aggressive blend of punk, Further In Evil is a shift in gears from her musical background in the anarcho punk scene and inspired by riot grrrl, crust and d-beat. “I always loved metal and heavy sounds too, but playing music was mostly a political form of activism to me so I’ve been playing punk for pretty much my whole life.” Marthe is “music for broken souls that can’t find peace”. The lyrics are full of rage and the music is full of strength; it has the power of Bathory and the sadness of Tiamat, tinged with the stench of Amebix.

12. One of the vanguards of the 90’s underground, punk/hardcore community, San Diego’s Heroin released their first 7” in 1991 before disbanding in 1993. In that short time, the band went on to influence countless post-hardcore and screamo bands of that era and even today. Heroin’s first 7” also marked the first release for the legendary independent label Gravity Records, which was central in developing and promoting the “San Diego sound” and also branched out into other forms of experimental music across their extensive catalog.

The Heroin discography contains all of the band’s out-of-print 7”s and 12”s, compilation tracks, as well as the session the band recorded at the infamous Inner Ear Studios in Washington, DC, and never-before-heard unreleased songs. A double LP Gatefold “tip on” jacket is beautifully packaged with a special zine with tons of photos and liner notes by Sonny Kay.
