Conceptually, ‘Not Enough’ serves as the emotional climax of the album. The record unfolds as a conceptual narrative following a character left comatose after being hit by a car and this track represents a critical battle within the protagonist’s mind. Fully aware he is in a coma, the character reflects on his life and decides whether it is worth waking up. Supposing his family and lover have moved on, he considers staying in the bliss of the coma world where everything is easy.
The full album, Gathering Dust, follows this character across both reality and the imaginary “coma-land,” focusing on themes of death, letting go and the space in between. The band intentionally left the story’s conclusion open to interpretation, allowing listeners to decide whether the protagonist wakes up or remains in the comfort blanket of his suspended existence. Even the album’s title ‘Gathering Dust’ carries a bittersweet weight. Goodall explains:
“Well, it started as a joke because we recorded the album quite some time ago, and unfortunately due to two of us having some serious health issues last year we postponed the release, leaving it on a back shelf gathering dust, so it just felt right.”

Produced at Farm Road studios with Bobby Smyth (Hutch, big long sun), Diurnals also strips things back: acoustic instrumentation, live recording, no click track. Keeping things ‘organic’ and ‘in the moment’, so to speak. (lead single ‘I know You’ was even recorded in one take, all musicians together in the same room. Channelling at the times the closeness of Elliott Smith, or Big Thief’s more rustic diversions, it’s also an EP of blooming expansions, of chamber-pop orchestrations as warm and bright as an “afternoon sun peaking through a window.” (Stereogum).

“‘Diurnals’ is full of light. Daylight songs. All with the intended message of vocalising gratitude, positivity, compassion, and love. We are more likely to open up and talk about difficult things, or darkness, out of necessity. We have to intentionally choose to express things like gratitude and love. And we should all do so, as often as we can. So I am.”

THE WIDTH OF SHADOWS is Projekt and Black Tape For A Blue Girl founder Sam Rosenthal’s first new album of solo electronic-ambient-drone music since 2015’s As Lonely As Dave Bowman: MONOLITH. Originally conceived as a collection of orphaned tracks, it evolved into a cohesive album painting a minimalist atmosphere of dark corners, hidden solitude, rippling cosmic waves of shadows, and time-altered transmissions of barren feelings.

Across the full span of ‘Gathering Dust’, Goodall utilises the ensemble’s orchestral breadth to transform the album’s concept into a vivid, widescreen dreamscape. While the subject matter flows between heavy themes, the arrangements remain lush and buoyant, ensuring the record never sinks into melodrama. ‘Gathering Dust’ is a strange, shimmering beauty; pairing the harmonic complexity of 70s jazz-pop with a raw, modern vulnerability that feels strikingly personal.

‘Paving Stones’ offers a key entry point into the world of Soft Top, introducing the album’s central themes of life, death and the uncertain space in between. The record unfolds as a conceptual narrative, following a character left comatose after being hit by a car on the way to a house party. ‘Your Aching Words’ (released February 13th) served as the opening chapter to the album and each track examines a different facet of that suspended existence: the world continuing without him, the strange pull of “coma-land” and the blurred boundary between reality and imagination.

Musically, Soft Top’s songs pair intimate, story-driven lyricism with rich, carefully layered arrangements, brought to life by a seven-piece band (featuring Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboards, Clarinet, Cello, and Flute) whose textures move gently between indie rock, chamber pop and soft rock. The result is a sound that tugs at the heartstrings quietly and deliberately.

Formed in March 2023 as the songwriting project of Miles Goodall, Soft Top blends classic soft-rock warmth with a distinctly modern indie intimacy. The project draws influence from the narrative detail of Andy Shauf, the melodic sensitivity of Matt Maltese and the lush arrangements of Steely Dan.

Filmed and recorded inside the historic ‘Great Thatch Barn’ at Falmer Court, a breathtaking 13th-century Tithe Barn, the session blends performance and visual art. Engineered and captured in an intensive five-hour window, the project serves as a blueprint for ELIKSA’s future creative output: a series of releases simulating spaces within the material world.

“As the weather in October is unpredictable: I was scouting for indoor/outdoor locations, hunting for dilapidated barns, and a friend of mine (thankfully!) recommended Falmer Court – with the most amazing medieval barn! We were very kindly accommodated and It was really special to play in such a beautiful, historic building. Afterwards, we all shared in a delightful picnic I had prepared; beside an anglo-saxon pond.”

The live session features performances by ELIKSA, Noah Fox, Tim Spencer, Monty Taft and Mina-Mae Alexander. It was directed by ELIKSA and Owen Mills, and mixed and mastered by ELIKSA’s bassist, Noah Fox.
