Once Upon a Time in Battersea is the debut album by South London-based solo artist and multi-instrumentalist Grr Ant (formerly of Baltimore at an Angle, Men in Action and Rest of the World). In early 2021, Grr Ant became inspired by the sounds of country and tried to find a way to infuse his love of 80s alternative into the genre.

The result is his first album under the moniker Grr Ant which is diverse in both instrumentation and influences, featuring everything from synths and drum machines to flutes and violins and taking cues from artists as varied as Kings of Leon and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.

All songs written and recorded by Grant Gillingham between February 2020 and February 2024.

Lovestruck is the debut single of South London-based solo artist and multi-instrumentalist Grr Ant. Heavily influenced by Phil Cordell’s Red Lady, Lovestruck was one of the first tracks written with this vision in mind and is the first single to be released in the build-up to Grr Ant’s debut album Once Upon a Time in Battersea this spring.

Through the leaves is the second single from Archie Sagers’ debut album. Influenced by the driving bass lines of Peter Hook (Joy Division and New Order) and the guitar work of Robert Smith (The Cure), the title track provides a post-punk energy which drives the song forward. With an accompanying music video, filmed in isolation, composed of psychedelic visuals of the Wiltshire countryside.

The B-Side, Nothing at All, displays the opposite feeling; with one Archie’s most relaxed and warm songs to date. Grant Gillingham, star of the labels roster with his debut album under the name Baltimore at an Angle, provides his vocals with their signature sentiment. A striking music video has also been created by Archie for this song. Contrasting bright washed out visuals with stark black and white imagery of his surrounding area in Wiltshire. Showing brightness and warmth can be found anywhere in these challenging times.

She’s a Mirage is the second single from Baltimore at an Angle’s 2nd album “I’m a Victor”. Combining jangly guitar and catchy bass hooks, Gilligham’s new track captures the essence of 80s indie from his bedroom in Bournemouth. Gilligham’s more collaborative approach with his second album presents the label founder, Archie Sagers, on bass for this track.

Baltimore at an Angle is G. Gillingham and he creates jangly indie rock songs from his home on an extremely low budget, recording all vocals with apple earphones and all guitars through I-Rig.

Baltimore at an Angle is G. Gillingham and he creates jangly indie rock songs from his home on an extremely low budget, recording all vocals with apple earphones and all guitars through I-Rig.

This new direction represents a higher fidelity of sound but the fuzzy vocals and jangly guitar that made his debut unique are still present in the album.

Gillingham chose to work with Archie Sagers for this album. Every song was sent to Archie for mixing and tidying up. Bass riffs, synthesizer flairs and creative reverb are present throughout the runtime and are a mark of Archie’s production. The collaboration between the two musicians brings an interesting departure from Gilligham’s usual lofi aesthetic.
