Filmed and recorded inside the historic ‘Great Thatch Barn’ at Falmer Court, a breathtaking 13th-century Tithe Barn, the session blends performance and visual art. Engineered and captured in an intensive five-hour window, the project serves as a blueprint for ELIKSA’s future creative output: a series of releases simulating spaces within the material world.

“As the weather in October is unpredictable: I was scouting for indoor/outdoor locations, hunting for dilapidated barns, and a friend of mine (thankfully!) recommended Falmer Court – with the most amazing medieval barn! We were very kindly accommodated and It was really special to play in such a beautiful, historic building. Afterwards, we all shared in a delightful picnic I had prepared; beside an anglo-saxon pond.”

The live session features performances by ELIKSA, Noah Fox, Tim Spencer, Monty Taft and Mina-Mae Alexander. It was directed by ELIKSA and Owen Mills, and mixed and mastered by ELIKSA’s bassist, Noah Fox.

Lyrically and conceptually, the single places the listener right in the heart of the album’s central narrative. ‘Waiting Game’ explores the feeling of being suspended in a purgatory between life and death, simply waiting for the next thing to come. This ties directly into the conceptual arc of ‘Gathering Dust’, which follows a character left comatose after being hit by a car on the way to a house party. Each track on the record examines a different facet of this suspended existence, and ‘Waiting Game’ perfectly captures the strange, undeniable pull of this “coma-land.”
Across the full span of ‘Gathering Dust’, frontman Miles Goodall utilises the ensemble’s orchestral breadth to transform heavy themes into a vivid, widescreen dreamscape. Soft Top’s textures move gently between indie rock, chamber pop, and soft rock, ensuring the record remains buoyant and never sinks into melodrama.

Following backing from the likes of Stereogum, BBC 6Music (Guy Garvey New Music Fix), The Line of Best Fit, Rough Trade, Far Out, God Is in The TV, CLUNK and Hard of Hearing – ‘Soft Song For A Worried Mind’ carries on Maximilian’s’ penchant for blushing, miniature folk-rock epics.

Segueing seamlessly from a gentle acoustic-guitar chug into full-bloom, cello-bowing baroque pop, its mix of immaculate arrangements and earnest lyricism almost feels like the product of some benevolent arcane ritual, recorded, as it was, during the weekend of the Super Beaver Moon last November.

Speaking more about ‘Soft Song…’, Maximilian says: “Vocalising compassion. The will to comfort. A love letter from afar. Cosying under the blanket of the present moment, fending off dark clouds of the future.”

Worm School – Cradle (Single)

Serving as a natural counterpart to their debut ‘Jacob’s Ladder’, ‘Cradle’ sees Worm School deepening the sound that’s already earnt them early trust from shoegaze figureheads. The track was recorded with Ben Easton of Deary alongside Dom Freeman, before being mastered by Simon Scott of Slowdive, a process that helped the band fully realise the song’s emotional weight and textural depth.

“Ben and Dom were absolutely incredible! We had several unsuccessful recording attempts and were feeling like maybe we couldn’t do it. Ben and Dom just ‘got’ us straight away and made us feel at home. Such pros! And Simon Scott put the cherry on the cake with his amazing mastering skills. It was unreal that he not only heard our music, but also liked and helped create it.” – (Dan, Worm School)

Worm School wears their influences on their sleeve. The track first started coming together after a bad attempt to copy an American Football riff, which moved so far from the original it became a new creation; transformed again when introduced to the rest of the band. ‘Cradle’ was a labour of love which took time to form into the song you hear now. Playing the track live was initially a challenge, says Dan of Worm School, “Every time we played it, we biffed it real bad. I distinctly remember the first time we hit that right and we all looked around at each other as if to say, ‘Fuck yeah! Well done guys! Don’t blow it now, the song is nearly over!’”
Lyrically, ‘Cradle’ drifts into themes of reincarnation and regrowth, using the image of tree roots in combination with their stratospheric sound to create a complete sonic narrative.

“We were thinking about reincarnation and whether that could mean seeing people you thought you’d lost again. The name of the track came from the line ‘At the willow tree, the roots grow out and they cradle me.’ Something to do with being eaten by a tree, but you’re fine with it!”

‘Your Aching Words’ serves as an opening chapter, a conceptual work exploring life, death and the liminal space in between. The track follows a central character who is left comatose after being hit by a car on the way to a house party. ‘Your Aching Words’ is rooted firmly in the real world, setting the scene in the moments before, and unknowingly during, the accident itself.

“‘Your Aching Words’ is speaking of a lovers’ conflict. It goes into the fallout from seeing them with someone else and the pain that causes. The track ends with a soliloquy-esque fourth wall breaking confession to the lost love.”

Formed in March 2023, SoftTop began as the alias and latest brainchild of songwriter Miles Goodall. SoftTop pairs honest story-like lyrics with generous decorations from a seven piece band (Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keyboards, Clarinet, Cello, and Flute). SoftTop’s music aims to pull at your heart strings, even if only very gently.

Worm School – Jacob’s Ladder (Music Video)

Unearthed at the tail end of 2022, Worm School writhe between melodic, ghostly dream pop and reverb-drenched walls of sound, swirling guitar and sparkling synth lines. Based in Manchester, Worm school comprises Will Davis (drums, vox), Dan Beach (guitar, vox), Jordan McGuffie (bass) and Liv Du Val (synth, vox).

Combining expansive guitar with ascending bass and hushed vocals, the track slowly builds from ambient beginnings into stratospheric shoegaze. Like an ascent into the clouds above, ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ takes the listener on a journey of self reflection; allowing them to immerse themselves in sonic meditation. On the inspiration behind the name for the single, Worm School say:

‘The name ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ came from Liv’s Cornish roots. It’s named after an infamous flight of stairs in Falmouth. The slow delay on the main guitar line felt like a kind of stairway into something beyond. The whole song came together quickly, and pretty soon became a favourite to play live. We think the name ties together the different parts of the Worm School sound – soft and fragile but also epic and atmospheric.’

On the lyrics of Jacob’s Ladder, Worm School say:

‘The idea was that the words are being whispered to you by a mindfulness app, with a kind of predatory sympathy. Like most of our songs, the lyrics evolved gradually after mumbling some random phrases into the mic and feeling our way through it. The song originally had two verses – the second verse’s lyrics were written the day before we went into the recording studio – but we edited it down after agreeing that the world might not be ready for nine minutes’ worth of Worm School heaven, just yet..’

Five years in the making, new album ‘Dreams Along The Shore’ is principally about memory. Taking the beaches of Archie’s childhood as a steady constant, the 11-track set explores relationships that have drifted, people that have grown apart. It expresses both a longing to return to the past, and an acceptance of what’s changed, all told via the dreamy stylings of dark post punk, melodic dream pop, and ambient beauty.

The second half of the tracklisting follows Newquay beaches along the coastline; an ambitious way to represent the time spent walking across them as a child. The song ‘Towan’ emerged after a night swim in the bay with childhood friends.

“It felt like a special moment when it was happening; lying in the black water looking up at the stars. The track is about feeling existentially lost but finding meaning in the moments that happen with the people you love. It’s about trying to let go of some grand meaning to your life and just enjoying each day as it happens.”

Elsewhere, Archie leans deep into his love of experimental production. ‘Cheaper Than Polaroids’ is a standout, built around intricate tape loops that stretch across rooms, slide over mic stands and degrade beautifully in real time. Using a bank of borrowed tape machines, Archie created and mixed the haunting loops live, manipulating the textures into a drifting, ghostly backdrop that connects this track to the next. Across the album, sounds from real places filter in. Field recordings from Brighton, captured and looped across tape, form the backbone of ‘Across The City’, a track that feels both rooted and surreal.

“I liked the idea of building a soundscape from where I actually live – every bus stop, bit of traffic, or bird call felt like it belonged in the record. Recordings of the sea from across the UK made their way onto the album.”

‘Great Western’, another of the coastline tracks, blends droning guitars with lyrics about long-distance friendships and the difficulty of staying close to people over time. Archie pulled in drummer James Devine best known for work with Brighton’s New // Improved, Shady Baby, and Arcadia Residential – after meeting him while producing for local punk band Slimy Bench.

Most of the album was self-produced, mixed, mastered and recorded by Archie Sagers; ‘Tolcarne’, ‘Fistral’ and ‘Crantock’ feature production from Matthew Gleeson (Welly). This gave Archie complete creative control from writing to production and mastering to make exactly what he was working towards.

“Working to my own deadline gave me the opportunity to create something really ambitious mixing ambient experimentation with dream pop songwriting. It let me create something that captured my experience of moving away from home, living in a city, finding new friends and losing old ones. I started working on the album 5 years ago and I’m a completely different person to who I was then – the record has grown with me as well and now it’s time to let it go.”

Featuring bedroom production and mixing in Sussex Studio A, ‘Columbus’ combines intimate recording with a polished mix. The track’s more stripped back arrangement allows for space to breathe between the layered bass guitar and other instruments. Chorus laden bass VI underpins the driving rhythm as further instrumentation is slowly added.

Lyrically, the track delves into the feeling of uncertainty in your early twenties; the contrast of being a fully grown adult yet never feeling more confused and daunted by the world before you. On the inspiration for the new single Archie says:

‘I wrote Columbus when I felt my most aimless. I was working as a chef in a restaurant where all the other staff were in their teens. Without any clear purpose or future plans for jobs or careers, I felt down and wanted to go away and magically find some purpose. Columbus was an exploration in running away across the sea. The track takes its name from the Kogonada film where the main character is struggling to leave the town and make something with her life – I really connected to the film’s beautiful visuals and subtle storytelling and it was a big inspiration for the music video.’
