Painted Doll, the new band formed by comedian / guitar shredder Dave Hill (Valley Lodge, Cobra Verde) and heavy metal legend Chris Reifert (Autopsy, Death), have signed to NYC independent label Tee Pee Records. The group’s self-titled debut, recorded and mixed by Tom Beaujour at Nuthouse Recording in Hoboken, NJ, will see a February 16, 2018 release.

Painted Doll came to life when “a death metal guy and a power pop guy got hammered together at a Goblin concert in Texas.” Soon after, Reifert and Hill began trying to out-deep cut each other with late 60’s/early 70’s Dutch and British psych pop before Chris suggested the two musicians form a band together inspired by the music they’d been trading. What does Painted Doll sound like, you ask? Let’s let the band do the talking…

“The Painted Doll record was a blast to make,” says Hill. “Chris is a death metal legend from the Bay Area and I’m a guy from Cleveland who worships the Kinks. Throw in our mutual love for obscure Dutch bands from the seventies and you’ve got Painted Doll. We’re super psyched to be working with Tee Pee Records to unleash our stone cold jams on the masses.”

“After getting to know Dave and talking about psychedelic bands and stuff, it was clear that Painted Doll needed to happen,” adds Reifert. “The powers of rock gave us our mission, which we gladly accepted. Now you can hear the visions that we had bouncing around in our heads. Foxes and rabbits, velvet and leather, smoldering rock and spacey psych….what else do you need? Play it loud and proud, babies!”

About Dave Hill:

Dave Hill is an American comedian, radio host, writer, musician and actor originally from Cleveland, Ohio. He is the host of The Goddamn Dave Hill Show on WFMU radio in Jersey City, New Jersey. Hill is a frequent panelist on the Comedy Central’s @midnight program and has appeared on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Inside Amy Schumer, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, and The Jim Gaffigan Show among others. Dave hosts the stage show The Dave Hill Explosion at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York and Hollywood and currently appears as on-air talent for HBO and Cinemax. Hill played bass for Cleveland-based rock band Cobra Verde, and currently fronts the power pop band Valley Lodge, whose song “Go” is the theme song to HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. He was also a member of Cleveland rock bands Sons of Elvis as well as Diamondsnake, a heavy metal band with Moby. Dave Hill has made out with a lot of chicks, is sweet at guitar, and smells really great. You can ask anyone.

About Chris Reifert:

Chris Reifert is an American death metal musician, and one of the pioneers of the death/doom genre. Although his music is more death metal than doom metal, he is one of the first musicians that blended the two styles. Reifert played drums on Death’s debut album, Scream Bloody Gore, and in 1987 formed his own band, Autopsy. After several celebrated albums, Autopsy split up in 1995 and Reifert and bandmate Danny Coralles began playing in their side-project, Abscess, full-time. After Abscess dissolved in 2010, Autopsy reformed. The band’s latest album, Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Graves, was released on April 21, 2014. NYC power pop pros Valley Lodge are basically the best rock band that you think you’ve never heard of, but that you already totally know. Yep, that catchy AF song is by this rad AF group of hot musicians who have the astute knack for creating the jangly pop rock earworms that ring awesomely throughout all of your best-ever dreams. Valley Lodge is known for infusing their hook-saturated songs with a sense of humor, no surprise since they’re fronted by comedian Dave Hill, and although they are more famous in Japan than they are here in the States, that’s all about to change. WITCH TAINT: EXTREME BIO

From the mean streets of Gary, Indiana by way of Oslo, Norway (or maybe the other way around- we’re not sure) comes Witch Taint, the most extremely extreme and Satanic Norwegian Black Metal band from Indiana ever probably and you can ask anyone.

While the origins of Witch Taint remain hazy, even to the members themselves, there is at least some evidence of the band’s existence dating back as far as late 2004, when Witch Taint founder Lance the King of Black Metal and About 500 Other Things Most People Can’t Handle (rumored to actually be comedian/musician Dave Hill) began emailing a mysterious man named Saittham, managing director of a Norwegian Black Metal record label in Norway, in hopes of securing a record contract (Read their legendary, extreme, brutal and 100% real email correspondence for yourself at www.theblackmetaldialogues.com) despite the fact that he had yet to record any music. However, we also know a version of the band consisting of Lance and his sworn enemy, Oslo native Matthias Backwards (rumored to actually be musician/comedian Phil Costello), began performing live as a duo in 2017, reading the aforementioned emails and playing a select few extremely extreme songs during sold out appearances at SXSW, in London and Oslo (where none other than Fenriz from Darkthrone was in the front row), and at the 2018 Wacken Open Air festival in Germany. These shows were awesome and a lot of members of the audience had to receive counseling both during and after the show because it was so kvlt, infernal, and occasionally foul in odor.

Anyway, after noticing the largely German-speaking audience at Wacken seemed to prefer their music over their talking, Lance and Matthias began recording the full-length debut Witch Taint album as soon as they got back to America. By this time, interest in Witch Taint had grown so much that none other than author Malcolm Gladwell dedicated an entire episode of his Broken Record podcast to the Witch Taint origin story and Lance’s email correspondence.

This past spring, Witch Taint began performing as a full, six-member live band (consisting mostly of members found in the darkest recesses of Craigslist) that is so extreme, brutal, grim, unholy, kvlt, and just sort of negative in general that most people can’t even handle it basically even if everyone agrees the Witch Taint T-shirts are pretty awesome and they should really consider keeping more mediums in stock but whatever.

The band’s full-length debut Sons of Midwestern Darkness, recorded entirely in darkness in a damp room that was also annoyingly cold even if you wore a coat and a hat and stuff the whole time, is set to be released by Tee Pee Records on 4/10/20. The album is extremely difficult to listen to in all the best ways and features guest appearances from members of such not-nearly-as-extreme-as-Witch Taint bands as Venom, Carpathian Forest, & Autopsy and also Lance’s dog Lucifuge because they forgot to keep the basement door shut even though she will end up coming down there every single time no matter what. Sons of Midwestern Darkness is a twelve-song collection of extremely grim yet very catchy & danceable heavy metal anthems that are perfect to get hammered and sing along to with all your closest friends and enemies. There are also five extremely extreme interludes where Lance and Matthias Backwards basically school motherfuckers on various topics, which is awesome. If you think you can handle it, which-statistically speaking anyway-you probably can’t, please get yourself a copy. And by all means, come see the band live (where Lance and Matthias will be joined by the destructive tendencies of opera diva La Sinistra [rumored to be Jennifer Valle], bassist Dean Ripper [rumored to be Dean Rispler], guitarist Thomas Guillotine [rumored to be Tom Beaujour], and drummist Markus St. Bastard [rumored to be Dave Richman]) for an assault on yours and a lot of other people’s senses. However, whether you decide to kill yourself, go sit in a ditch for a while, or simply stare off into the distance for a disturbingly long amount of time as a result of having done either one of these things, that is not Witch Taint’s fucking problem.
