Like every beginning of the year, the editorial staff of Desert-Rock offers you a look in the rear view mirror on the past year to identify the best records that have worn out our turntables.

This ranking is the synthesis of all the team’s opinions, reflecting the variety of genres that you are used to finding with us (click on each to read the detailed review of the disc published on the site when it is released):

1) My Sleeping Karma – Atma

During the seven years following the superb Mokshathe musicians of My Sleeping Karma have lived through the worst: death, serious illness, divorce, COVID… They come back, very much alive but terribly scarred, with this Atma which exudes emotion, brilliantly alternating light and shade. Not just the Resilience Disc, Atma is simply a large disc.

2) Mantar – Pain Is Forever and This Is The End

Incredible live and now unstoppable on album, Mantar’s blackened sludge takes the reasons for anger even further. Essential.

3) Elder – Innate Passage

With Innate PassageElder continues to evolve his heayv/psych while maintaining the progressive and massive aspect of a Reflections of a Floating World. The result is close to perfection, each trip in the album is a powerful and subtle trip, in short, we can’t wait to see what it will be like live between the band’s key pieces!

4) Wo Fat – The Singularity

The kings of Texas jam are back and they don’t really like the way our planet is being treated. They send us messages with great wah wah blows. Their best album since The Black Code ?

5) King Buffalo – Regenerator

Third opus of the group’s COVID saga, this seven-part galette has a taste of heavy psyche that mixes soaring atmospheres and prog rhythms, all spiced up with a delicious boosted impulse. Another triumph for King Buffalo, who proves with this masterpiece his position as king in the world of cosmic and progressive stoner. Not to be missed.

6) Crowbar – Zero and Below

Crowbar never disappoints, it’s the prerogative of bands with good money, but sometimes, once every 10 years maybe, they are angrier than usual. Well that was this year. From riff box to slap box there is finally only one step.

7) Sasquatch-Fever Fantasy

The COVID will have made us wait for this Fever Fantasy more than two years after its recording, but it was worth it: these too rare lords of the Californian stoner offer a new excellent disc of fuzzy standards, which comes to raise the level of their irreproachable discography. 22 years old and still all her teeth! One day Sasquatch will finally get the recognition they deserve.

8) Color Haze – Sacred

It’s not 22 years of existence nor a change of bassist that will have stopped Color Haze in its trajectory. With Sacred the group has renewed its contract as icon of the genre and leaves in its discography a piece of humility and balance.

9) Friends of Hell – Friends of Hell

First album for this “super group” (with huge quotes) more doom than the most doom of your girlfriends. Only tubes, only pleasure. For fans of Wizards, Reverend Bizarre or anyone with good taste.

10) The Great Evil – II

Sadly little known (and shamefully absent from all the concert scenes outside the UK), The Grand Mal is perhaps the best English stoner band… just that! Their second album, a lazy record (less than thirty minutes excluding “interludes”), nevertheless offers some of the most exciting classic stoner tracks of the year! At the end of 2022, the group announced that it was going on hiatus for personal reasons… When it doesn’t want to…

11) Earthless – Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons

The votes from the Desert-rock team weren’t enough to put Earthless on the podium this year. May a hundred demons come and haunt them through the night for this mistake. Earthless has released an exceptional album, let yourself be enchanted.

12) Nebula – Transmissions From Mothership Earth

Never stingy with cosmic fuzz, but not always as inspired as his great past masterpieces, Nebula tumbles with an album Charged pure psychedelic banderillas that touched our hearts. And not on the edges but well To The Center.

13) Red Sun Atacama – Darwin

Rage in the belly and sharp fangs, Red Sun Atacama gives to hear with Darwin its full pest potential. A vigorous album built in the purest of Stoners. But make no mistake, if the group knows its classics, it’s a wind of change blowing on each track of the cake.

14) Barabbas – Death Calls All Living

Barabbas offers the best of English classic doom from the end of the 20th century, but they started at the wrong time (early 2000s) and in the wrong place (France, imagine!). Anachronistic? Not even: at ease in their time, the group offers an amazing disc, honest and honest… and even sung in French! A treat for doomsters.

15) Conan – Evidence of Immortality

The last production of the English will not have shocked us: Conan makes Conan… and even better than on his previous albums! The group reinforces its basics and synthesizes at the same time its last years of musical adventures. Evidence of Immortality does honor to their discography and won unanimous support this year. Not revolutionary but very good.

16) Naxatras – IV

This fourth opus from our Greek friends seals the arrival of the last thief Pantelis Kargas. A reorganization which necessarily transforms the band’s music, which here reveals a hushed rhythm section, a funky guitar and a beguiling synth, without an ounce of distortion. However, the groove remains, the writing remains impeccable and lets the spectral magic of Naxatras bewitch us as always.

17) Clutch – Sunrise On Slaughter Beach

The Clutch liner has been moving forward and avoiding pitfalls for a long time. Sunrise On Saughter Beach is luxurious and robust. Even if it is not the most beautiful adventure of the group, the plaque inevitably attracts attention and we can only praise it both for its good workmanship and for what Clutch represents as a group.

18) Early Moods – Early Moods

What could be more quirky and strange than a quintet of young Californians who are totally dedicated to traditional doom metal, tinged with hard rock from the 70s and 80s. It’s dated, of course, but with the knife between the teeth, the passion in the integrity transpiring from the slightest riff, Early Moods takes us by the hand to immerse itself in a record that will be difficult to get rid of!

19) Hallas – Isle Of Wisdom

Unclassifiable, iconoclastic, barred, as heavy as psychedelic, Hällas could only hatch in Sweden in the end. Even if the group seems set to run forever behind the incredible freshness of its album Excerpts From A Future Pastlet’s not sulk our pleasure with this Isle Of Wisdom of a very fine quality.

20) Ecstatic Vision – Elusive Mojo

The Americans offer us yet another disc of their irresistible grub, made of hypnotic and frenetic kraut psych rock, where groove and energy once again make for the most beautiful combination. Their best album? Probably, just like their previous ones.

Like every year, we have pushed the ranking up to 20 records, which means that high quality records are not left in the shadows…

However, we find other superb records at the bottom of the ranking: Mudweiser, High Tone Son of a Bitch, Deadly Vipers, Valley of the Sun, Freedom Hawk, Carson, Messa, Sonic Flower… It was not bad this year 2022 finally ! 32 discs were mentioned by our team of columnists in the best of this year.

We are now waiting to see what 2023 will have in store…

On the occasion of Desertfest Berlin, representatives of the press and media are invited into a room to listen to the latest My Sleeping Karma, a privilege that brings us to the site an hour before ordinary mortals, poor beasts of burden enslaved to your happiness, O terrible readers.

A projector, two loudspeakers and one of the best bands on the psych scene, that’s it for the decor. The hearing of Atma My Sleeping Karma’s latest album to be released is being done in parallel with the screening of clips.

At first glance, the artwork is always incredibly polished. The first notes anchor us in the universe of the group. The aerial bridges, the power of the covers where the drums mark syncope… “Maya Shatki” introduces its last third with an unusual sound for the group. A whiter, drier guitar… how to say… astonishing.

We have the impression of constantly listening to the same album with tiny variations that make it unique. Unfortunately the basic sound installation does not pay homage to the album.

The clip “Prema” takes us, in stylized illustration, in the footsteps of an antediluvian bird that travels the world through the ages, flying above all that the world has done, best and worst, to arrive, at the climax of the track, in the midst of a terribly destructive war. You would think the band was referring to the current situation in Ukraine, yet the creation of this clip started in 2018, long before the recent shit wave that hit the world.
From “Prema” part the whole concept of the album Atmaemotional digest of what is happening in the world, just as much as what the group has experienced in recent years. “It’s an album that comes from deep within us” Matthias tells us. It is true that the group exposes its guts with Atmaand not just a little.

We find more or less stressful sounds, evoking the ambient disarray in which the countries are plunged, as well as calmer and enveloping parts which augur better days. “After the rain, the good weather” is what the members of the group try to tell us, like an invitation to take each other’s arms to rebuild a more beautiful world.

If we had to find a moral Atma it’s the one used by the group, that of a bird that sees the world from different points of view, an open story for everyone in which one must try to see the world from different perspectives.

(Thanks to Paulina for having put his words on this chronicle)

It’s the chestnut tree every year obviously, so here is the eagerly awaited top of the best albums of the year for Desert-Rock.

This ranking is the synthesis of all the opinions of the team, reflecting the variety of genres that you are used to finding with us (click on each to read the detailed chronicle of the disc):

1) Monster Magnet – A Better Dystopia

When the godfathers of the genre decide to offer an album of covers, obviously they do not do it just any old way: through a skilful mix of sure values and real discoveries, they not only manage to offer a precious and rare look at their songs. musical references (colorful… like the album cover!), while simply offering an excellent album… by Monster Magnet! Superb performance.

2) Samsara Blues Experiment – End Of Forever

An album of incredible density and unfortunately in the spirit of the times. It closes more than a decade of collaboration between exceptional musicians and completes (?) A work of rare emotional intelligence. Samsara goes as he lived, creative and talented.

3) King Buffalo – The Burden of Restlessness

First opus of a triptych which should have ended during the year and will have to wait. The Burden of Restlessness proclaims loud and clear that you have to rely on King Buffalo and his riffs while progressing and subtlety. An album where even when the compositions are on the edge, they always fall on the side of the light.

4) Domkraft – Seeds

Domkraft artisans returned this year with a beautiful object carrying their dough. A heavy cake, a sign of quality and yet light enough to come back on its own and almost endlessly on the turntable. Seeds was able to capture the listener and confirm Domkraft’s know-how. A must have of the past year.

5) Domadora – The U Book

Generosity and letting go make this new Domadora album a refreshing 2021 success. The U Book is an unexpected journey to the confines of jamming and understanding between musicians. And too bad for those who started to take stock of the year at the end of November, before its release …

6) Dozer – Vultures

One of the best formations in the history of the stoner announced its return to business in early 2022. To keep their fans patient, you have to savor these 6 tracks captured between 2004 and 2005 when the group was at its peak – when Through The Eyes Of Heathens was in the making – as well as the tragically fated UFO “Vinegar Fly”. Zero filling and zero lack of taste on the menu of this plate which constitutes an excellent opportunity to dive or even dive back into Dozer’s repertoire.

7) Kal-El – Dark Majesty

Dark Majesty, or the 2021 edition of a now well-mastered recipe. Ultra-fuzzy guitars chained to a rhythmic section with a powerful groove, overhung by a voice hovering above like the spaceship often present on the covers. All enjoying a monumental production and an extremely careful mix. One more piece of these dear Norwegian friends, to collect without hesitation.

8) Alastor – Onwards and Downwards

Sweden still has a few nuggets in their bag to reveal, and Alastor is one of them. With its (only) second album, the group confirms a bluffing talent for writing, in the service of rich and intelligent compositions, served by a delicious sound. An exciting record and a real promise for the future.

9) Robots Of The Ancient World – Mystic Goddess

Small Stone Records is not dead! This year they found us this nugget of group in the right line of their solid reference catalog, namely a production of real good US stoner: an edgy stoner but not that, with clever and effective songs, a good singer … We fingers crossed that the group continues on this path.

10) Monolord – Your Time to Shine

The doom band we love to hate, for all the wrong reasons! Your Time To Shine, unpretentious, in line with their previous productions, has found its place in our top of the year, by dint of solid riffs, an always as effective sound and a writing talent that we can not dispute. Could the album be improved? Sure, but it still delivers a healthy dose of quality doom, so let’s not sulk.

10) Green Lung – Black Harvest

Directly emanating from the old school doom metal of the 70s and 80s, the Englishmen of Green Lung confirm all the good that we already thought of them, with what is probably their best album to date. Completely uninhibited, the quintet shoots a bit in all directions… and hits the target with each shot! Their energy, their uninhibited inspiration and their quality of writing quickly won over us.

12) Eldovar – A Story of Darkness & Light

Hard to say at the moment but… COVID hasn’t produced all bad things! Disturbed and isolated by the various health constraints, the musicians of these two groups that nothing seemed to bring together a priori – Kadavar and Elder less their bassist – met in the studio to write and record this album, the quality of which will have surprised many more. a. Kadavar and Elder could only work well together anyway!

12) Kadabra – Ultra

Ultra, here is a title which could pass for presumptuous and which instead signs the advent of Kadabra, Ultra will have been one of the plates which this year will have sublimated fifty years of Sabbath riffs to include them in compositions with modern structures to breathe a breath of fresh air on this young production.

14) Mythic Sunship – Wildfire

Among the swarm of psych records released this year, few finally emerged during the review. Mythic Sunship is one of those groups that have stood out, through an album very skillfully mixing jam rock and psych rock, all in a musical chaos in precarious balance between WTF improvisation and unstable structures. The disc had everything to crash, but by dint of innovation, creativity and control, it skilfully comes out of the game.

15) King Buffalo – Acheron

Acheron – King Buffalo’s second record released this year – is the Dark side of the moon of the third millennium. And King Buffalo is the biggest rock band today. Bar point.

16) Count Raven – The Sixth Storm

The rebirth of the cult Swedish combo, more than 12 years after its previous record and after 35 years of career, all the same! Everything made us fear the disc too many, stinking of mothballs and lack of inspiration. Quite the contrary, Count Raven appearing determined to find his place of reference among the old school doom metal bands that count… again and again!

16) Lucid Sins – Cursed!

Between Witchcraft and 70’s prog, with the shadow of Pentagram hovering not far, obviously, the Scottish Lucid Sins offer a second album more successful, more melodic. A treat.

18) Suncraft – Flat Earth Rider

It’s their first album and they made my summer sunny! On a mix of Truckfighters and Elder (among others of course), energetic, powerful and a little fat on the edges, in short, perfect for fighting the rain!

18) Hooded Menace – The Tritonus Bell

Sixth album and turning heavy 80’s for the putrid Finns. One of their best albums to date.

20) Iceburn – Asclepius

Gentry Densley has become a discreet but always too unproductive musical genius, an enlightened but atypical composer, and a passionate performer. After Ascend and especially Eagle Twin in recent years, he dusted off Iceburn, a project buried for 20 years, and offered with his friends 2 titles (!) Bloated with daring, originality, power, and talent, therefore. A complex but fascinating record.

As every year we have pushed the classification up to 20 discs, which makes it possible not to leave in the shade very qualitative discs… As for the albums at the gates of the classification, they are the sign of a year of production finally rather rich, in discoveries (Moon Coven, Wormsand, Bogwife,…) or in sure values (Sunnata, Motorpsycho, Khemmis…). 45 records were cited by our team of 10 columnists in this year’s best!

To us 2022!

Ten years already that Mars Red Sky released their first album! To celebrate that, Mrs Red Sound re-releases the limited edition vinyl in a gorgeous orange livery (Amazing, right ?!).

As it seemed a bit limited as a birthday present, our Bordeaux residents include in the cover in addition to an illustrated booklet with the lyrics of the songs, a code that allows its lucky owner to remix the album via a dedicated web page. We discover the tool “MRS Inside” which allows you to play with the buttons corresponding to each instrument as well as zoom in on videos of the recording that took place in a house in the Spanish desert.

Pre-orders are happening HERE while waiting for the tour this fall.
