Maximilian has been a steady force in Brighton’s scene since 2021, cultivating a fanbase that proudly sing along with their favourite songs. Blending raw 90s alt textures with introspective, minimalist songwriting, his sound sits somewhere between Elliott Smith and Big Thief.

Produced by Bobby Smyth and mixed by Yuri Shibuichi (Honeyglaze, Tapir!, Mary in the Junkyard), ‘Long Time Gone’ features a weaving narrative structure that gracefully rises and builds into waves of emotive melodies.

On ‘Long Time Gone’ Maximilian says:

“This song is quite experimental for me. It’s long and strange structure differs a lot from most songs I’ve written previously. Using synths and a harmonica for the first time was really fun and feels very new. I’m really proud to say I played every instrument on this recording. It’s something I used to try and do, but would always wind up banging my head against the wall in frustration, and I found recording with friends more fun than that, so I stopped. So now, this is my little magnum opus. I’ve had the song for a while, it’s very symbolic to a pivotal time in my life, and it’s really turned out well. I can’t wait to share it.”

Hailing from Brighton, ELLiS·D veers between Psychedelic jangle and taut Post-Punk attack, singing with an unapologetic honesty of the burden of guilt shouldered by today’s youth for the world future generations are set to inherit. Fierce Motorik rhythms underpin sweeping, rose-tinted melodies, subtly hinting at aspects of Indie, Krautrock and Baroque Pop without ever firmly bedding down roots at any of their doors.

Starting out as a drummer playing in a host of different bands from the age of 15 – most notably the garage four piece Strange Cages – ELLiS·D began his solo career in the summer of 2019 with the release of the single “Elastic” before following up with a string of further singles and his debut EP in Feb ’21, the first record to be released via his own DIY Label ‘Change The F*cking Records!’.

‘We Are The Last Generation’ sees ELLiS·D at his most eclectic to date, fusing together the high-octane energy that his live audiences have become accustomed to with a more methodical songwriting approach, underpinned by an anxiety ridden, histrionic vocal style that simultaneously quivers and roars above the instrumentation. Tackling deep-rooted existential fears on the EP of a future slipping from our grasp, ELLiS·D attempts to come to terms with these issues with the cynicism and trace hope embodied by the youth of today. It also sees him team up with local Brighton label Crafting Room Recordings for a first physical release on cassette

Since the return of live music in 2021 ELLiS·D has been performing constantly across the South East, supporting the likes of Blanketman, U-Bahn, Hadda Be + Hi-Vis in Brighton + London on top of hometown headline shows, receiving airplay from BBC Introducing, Boogaloo, TotallyRadio, Slack City, as well as curating a monthly night in the cellar of the Brunswick with Change The F*cking Records!

For the launch of the EP ELLiS·D will be playing two separate release shows at The Green Door Store in Brighton on 6th December followed by The George Tavern in London on the 10th.

Picking up where he left off on debut EP ‘We Are The Last Generation’ last December, ‘Drifting’ was recorded by ELLiS·D and producer Maximilian in his shared DIY studio space known to its inhabitants only as ‘The Carwash’ around the same time of his first UK headline tour toward the end of 2021.

Best known on the south coast as the manic drummer of Strange Cages who set about flailing his limbs across the tattered kits of Brighton’s basement DIY scene, the solo project of ELLiS·D leaps between psychedelic jangle, kraut rock and taut post-punk attack with a bristling energy. Showcasing a range of influence from the likes of Jaki Liebezeit (CAN) and Faye Milton (Savages) to the bittersweet romanticism of Nick Cave, sweeping melodies overlay fierce, motorik rhythms as ELLiS·D flirts with tongue-in-cheek 21st Century hysteria of a future slipping slowly from our grasp.

New single ‘Drifting’ soars in with a magnetic bassline as shimmering guitars add a layer of gloss to ELLiS·D’s sound, before lifting off to a ethereal dream-like space in the full seven minutes keeping the listener on their toes whilst the pounding and hard-hitting drums also keeps the track firmly grounded. Drawing on the themes of ‘Drifting’, ELLiS·D offers:

“I wanted to further explore the playful instrumental side on ‘We Are The Last Generation’ whilst shadowing my previous approach to the EP. There’s less of doom-laden appearance to the single but also less of a irony to the lyrical approach about processing stories of the darkest nature in the media almost every day of our lives, and how that can often make it feel as though the line between reality and fantasy is permanently blurred.”

Recorded entirely in separate live takes by ELLiS·D and produced by Maximilian (guitarist in ELLiS·D’s live outfit), the DIY approach that has encapsulated his discography so far is on show for all to see here but with a noticeable step up in production values as the pair draw upon their own self-recording experiences to create a feel that rejects trying to emulate the ‘polished’ post-punk sound that permeates alternative radio stations, but fully embraces his raw and powerful live performance.
