Written and recorded entirely by ELLiS·D himself (aka Ellis Dickson) at Hackney Road studios with Shuta Shinoda (Hot Chip, Jenny Beth), ‘Shakedown’ thunders through a scorching, fuzzed-up blitzkrieg of rocket-fuelled, goth-tinged psych-punk, adding another layer of madness to Ellis’ brand of ‘on edge’ rock ‘n’ roll that’s infested with 21st century paranoia.

The single caps off a busy year for Ellis and his band that has also included two nationwide headline tours, appearances at Kendal Calling and Left of The Dial, shows with the likes of Sweeping Promises, Vinyl Williams and The Goa Express, as well as Press/Radio backing from BBC Radio 6Music (Tom Robinson, Emily Pilbeam), Radio X (John Kennedy), So Young Magazine, NME, Far Out and Hard of Hearing.

Discussing the single, Ellis says: “I channelled a lot of fear and frustration into this track when I was writing it. It was very cathartic. I wanted to try and create something from the point of view of someone on a total ego trip who exudes complete over-confidence as means of bottling up their true anxieties. It was nice – for an hour or so.”

Following the release of the EP, ELLiS·D will be embarking on a seventeen-date UK tour from 17th October starting at The Craufurd Arms in Milton Keynes before a run of shows supporting THE DSM IV, a slot at Nottingham’s Karma Fest and culminating in hometown headline shows at The Victoria in London and Brighton’s The Green Door Store.

Recording the EP in six days at Hackney Road Studios with producer Shuta Shinoda (Hot Chip, Jenny Beth), ELLiS·D serves up a sound at once both heavy and light, bright and dark, twisting between modern and vintage sensibilities with a flamboyant flair.

Having already teased lead single ‘Straitjacket Blues’ earlier in the year to much acclaim, including repeated airplay from BBC Radio 6 (Tom Robinson) and leading to support slots for Razorlight at Brighton Dome and Hammersmith Apollo, the release of ‘I Want You To Know’ further cements their unique blend of emotive lyrical sensibilities and psych-driven hooks taken from the much anticipated EP.

Brighton-based solo artist and multi-instrumentalist ELLiS·D is set for his second single release of 2023, the twisted, psychosomatic art-rock number ‘Degenerate Effeminate’ on Tuesday 25th April before heading out across the continent for a first European tour in between support slots with Razorlight at Brighton Dome (8th April) and Hammersmith Apollo (12th May).

Following a prolific string of releases in 2022, ‘Degenerate Effeminate’ marks his second collaboration with producer Shuta Shinoda (Hot Chip, Jenny Beth). Underpinned by laidback, swaggering grooves and
pulsating organ lines, ELLiS·D explores a different side of himself channelling the off-beat histrionic vocal quirks of David Byrne and Cate Le Bon as the track continually shifts and evolves before striding headlong into a monstrous explosion of fuzz and Mitch Mitchell-esque drumming prowess.

Reflecting on the single, ELLiS·D had this to offer:

“Degenerate Effeminate slices your personality in half. Its an egocentric look at the part of your brain that wishes it could switch off from the world and indulge in the hollow eccentricites of modern artistic life. It’s incredibly self-invoved. It takes your anxieties and flushes them down a pair of drainpipes.”

Picking up where he left off on debut EP ‘We Are The Last Generation’ last December, ‘Drifting’ was recorded by ELLiS·D and producer Maximilian in his shared DIY studio space known to its inhabitants only as ‘The Carwash’ around the same time of his first UK headline tour toward the end of 2021.

Best known on the south coast as the manic drummer of Strange Cages who set about flailing his limbs across the tattered kits of Brighton’s basement DIY scene, the solo project of ELLiS·D leaps between psychedelic jangle, kraut rock and taut post-punk attack with a bristling energy. Showcasing a range of influence from the likes of Jaki Liebezeit (CAN) and Faye Milton (Savages) to the bittersweet romanticism of Nick Cave, sweeping melodies overlay fierce, motorik rhythms as ELLiS·D flirts with tongue-in-cheek 21st Century hysteria of a future slipping slowly from our grasp.

New single ‘Drifting’ soars in with a magnetic bassline as shimmering guitars add a layer of gloss to ELLiS·D’s sound, before lifting off to a ethereal dream-like space in the full seven minutes keeping the listener on their toes whilst the pounding and hard-hitting drums also keeps the track firmly grounded. Drawing on the themes of ‘Drifting’, ELLiS·D offers:

“I wanted to further explore the playful instrumental side on ‘We Are The Last Generation’ whilst shadowing my previous approach to the EP. There’s less of doom-laden appearance to the single but also less of a irony to the lyrical approach about processing stories of the darkest nature in the media almost every day of our lives, and how that can often make it feel as though the line between reality and fantasy is permanently blurred.”

Take note is the second single from the upcoming E.P. by Brighton based live artist ELLiS·D. Combining an off kilter jumpy rhythm with explosive distortion and unstoppable drums.

Best known on the south coast as the manic drummer of Strange Cages who set about flailing his limbs across the tattered kits of Brighton’s basement DIY scene, ELLiS·D began his solo project in late 2019 with the release of debut single ‘Elastic’ which led to support slots for DITZ, Frankie & The Witch Fingers, U-Bahn, Mush + more across the UK in the
short space of six months before the pandemic ground live music to a halt.

2022 has seen performances at legendary London venues The Windmill, Shackelwell Arms, Old Blue Last, Paper Dress Vintage among others as well as four packed out shows at this year’s The Great Escape.

Sleeping Sun’ builds surely in suspense before unravelling into a pure delightful chaos.

Recorded entirely in separate live takes by ELLiS·D and produced by Maximilian (guitarist in ELLiS·D’s live outfit), the DIY approach that has encapsulated his discography so far is on show for all to see here but with a noticeable step up in production values as the pair draw upon their own self-recording experiences to create a feel that rejects trying to emulate the ‘polished’ post-punk sound that permeates alternative radio stations, but fully embraces his raw and powerful live performance.

Self recorded in between dates of his UK headline tour with producer Maximilian in Brighton’s secret DIY studio space known to its inhabitants only as ‘The Carwash’, this new offering from one of Brighton’s most prolific songwriters bursts from the frame with a nervous yet assertive energy that has all the hallmarks of an artist that has truly found his feet.

Having released his debut EP and three further singles since the turn of the year, the drummer turned multi-instrumentalist caps off a busy 2022 with the five-track ‘EP II’ following firmly in the footsteps of prolific inspirations Ty Segall and Oh Sees. ELLiS·D has never been one to be easily categorised and ‘EP II’ is no different, touching upon influences from the wonky art-punk stylings of Talking Heads to the rhythmic snarl of ‘Let Love In’ era Nick Cave, whilst also showing why he is renowned in hometown Brighton as one of the city’s most creative drummers with nods to both Jaki Lebeizeit (CAN) and Faye Milton (Savages) mixing with ELLiS·D’s own unmistakeable playing style.

Tracks ‘Duress’ and ‘Take Note’ underpin the frenzied high-octane approach to much of the EP, as ‘Sleeping Sun’ builds surely in suspense before unravelling into a pure delightful chaos. ELLiS·D’s drumming prowess comes to the fore on eight-minute ‘Rosie’ as the track veers wildly from one section to another with nods to modern day kraut rock as well as early King Gizzard neo psychedelia.
