Lauren Lakis makes songs that are steeped in darkness, but inside of them is a sense of hope. They are propelled by the possibility of emerging on the other side feeling less alone and fully transformed.

On her debut album Deadlights, set for release on Riding Easy Records on May 8, 2026, she conjures a shifting reality—one defined by both distortion and clarity. Indebted to shoe gaze and ’90s alt rock, its 10 tracks are filled with ethereal vocals, melodic guitars, and a heavy low end. It’s inspired by groups like Deftones and Hole, powerful bands that explore the emotional bottom but are able to rise from the depths.

Lakis was born in Baltimore, where she was raised by her single mother. As she grew up, she lost multiple family members and friends to addiction. She became an actor and a photographer, trying to capture the human experience with each endeavor. Her travels led to stints living in Prague and Tokyo, before she moved to Los Angeles. In 2016 she endured a horrible breakup, and then her mother was in a car accident that left her paralyzed.

Though Lakis was already singing in a band at the time, these life-altering events motivated her to focus on writing and recording her own music. “When you’re in a place of total surrender, you are able to get out of your own way and finally do the thing you want to do,” she says.

After the car accident, Lakis’s mother’s health deteriorated, and Deadlights was recorded over the last year of life, with Lakis frequently travelling back to Baltimore to care for her. Despite these circumstances and the recurring theme of loss in its songs, Lakis doesn’t consider Deadlights a grief album. Instead it captures what’s possible when you survive the worst reality you can imagine. “That loss, the experience of going through the absolute worst thing, there’s a freedom in that,” she says. “There’s a liberation in that where I almost feel invincible.”

When I was approached by Riding Easy Records about this project, I’m not sure they understood exactly what they’d done. They turned over Twenty-One volumes and over three hundred files of post hippie, aggressive, apocalyptic and psychedelic rock, funk metal and said, “do your thing.” What was supposed to be a quick flip turned into a 7-month project. I laughed, I cried, I broke shit and put it all back together again. And I mean that, literally and figuratively. Because, y’all, halfway through this labor of funk, my studio flooded. I was then relocated, that’s including 15k records, demo’ed, remodeled, rebuilt and moved back. Not once did I stop working. This ain’t no micro dose, this is two tabs, double dipped. So this time, take the brown acid. – Mr. Dibbs

Brown Acid is the longest running compilation series collecting obscure, heavy underground rock tracks from the late 1960s through the mid 1970s, released by RidingEasy Records in collaboration with Owner of Permanent Records Lance Barresi and RidingEasy Owner Daniel Hall. It focuses on hard rock, proto-metal, heavy psych, stoner-ish acid rock, and early proto-punk from bands that usually only managed to release a lone demo 45 or self-released single before disappearing into obscurity. Framed as a kind of “post-hippie, pre-punk” document, the series digs up and properly licenses these forgotten cuts, presenting them as numbered “Trips” that function both as a historical excavation of a lost heavy rock underground and as a cult-favorite listening experience for modern fans of fuzzed-out, riff-heavy sounds. This mixtape done by Mr. Dibbs is to showcase these songs in a different light to show just how broad and psychedelic the Brown Acid series really is, giving it a new take that has never been done before with this kind of material.

Stepson – Band Bio (for Stepson, 1974)

Emerging from the gritty rock scene of Los Angeles in the early 1970s, Stepson carved a reputation as a no-nonsense hard rock band that boiled down the decade’s excess into pure, unapologetic attitude. Formed by seasoned players who had knocked around in earlier groups and picked up the raw essence of live performance on the club circuit, Stepson exploded onto vinyl in 1974 with their self-titled debut—their sole official album, but one that has lived on as a cult favorite among fans of tough, streetwise rock ’n’ roll. The lineup brought together Jeff Hawks (vocals), Joey Newman (guitar), Bruce Hauser (bass), and Len Fagan (drums), each of whom poured their collective fire into a sound that fused the swagger of Detroit rock with West Coast edge. Critics and collectors have often compared Stepson’s style to the proto-punk grit of the Stooges or MC5, meshed with the hard-driving grooves more typical of early ’70s L.A. rock. While Stepson never reached mainstream recognition, their lone LP has been rediscovered by cult audiences and record diggers who value its raw energy and unfiltered delivery. With riffs that cut straight to the bone, street-level storytelling, and vocals that teeter between a snarl and a soulful wail, Stepson has come to represent one of those rare moments when a band captured lightning in a bottle—even if only once. Today, the album remains a hidden treasure from the hazier corners of the 1970s, a testament to the era when rock bands were still dangerous, hungry, and fiercely themselves. Fast forward to 2025, RidingEasy Records has now properly remastered and re-issued this album for all to enjoy.

Hailing from the Central Valley of California, HÖG’s founding member Daniel moved to Portland in 2018 and formed the group, releasing an EP with the initial lineup in 2022. In early 2024 it was announced that Portland locals and friends Adam and Bobcat would join ranks, and they went to work playing shows and developing their upcoming debut album, BLACKHOLE.

While HÖG aligns with the familiar tones and rhythm of heavy rock n roll of the 1970s, this group is by no means derivative. Their collective influences and backgrounds of punk and metal that encourage steady experimentation, along with what Daniel identified as “the dirty bleakness that Portland embodies most of the year” allows the sound of BLACKHOLE to stand on its own. It is dark and grimy, and best played loud.

Daniel’s writing occurred over two timelines, and while the lyrical content has shifted from “optimistically defiant and lighthearted” in the early work to more serious subject matter influenced by “the state of the world, depression, and sex” in newer songs, the execution in both live performance and studio sound does not feel disjointed. This stands as a testament to the band’s membership and unity. Adam’s swift cadence on the kit with Bobcat’s bassline moving in waves, the low end allows Daniel to wail through every fret on his guitar while performing his lyrics in an equally wide vocal range.

Recorded in the summer of 2024 in the back of Trevor Labovitz amp repair store named Arcane Amps in Portland Oregon, entirely on 2” reel tape and spanned about 2 months recording after hours when the shop was closed.

Mixed by Matt Williams, known for his band HELL from here in Oregon.

Mastered by Amy Dragon at Telegraph Studios.
