Crimson Earth – Heathen Woman

Dorset’s Crimson Earth were an immediate gut-punch to the local
scene in August 1970, quickly moving from rehearsals to rapturously
received gigs. By the end of that year they had won a competition
to crown the most popular regional band (beating off competition
from other local favourites Graveyard), which led to a television
appearance and an audition for EMI.
The band was comprised of Sam Champ (vocals), Dave Martin
(drums) and brothers Dave Wynn (guitar) and Chris Wynn (bass). In
1971 they started working with the Plastic Dog agency from Bristol
and toured the country, though mainstream success proved
surprisingly elusive, with the band splitting in 1976.
Crimson Earth recorded six original tracks on a reel-to-reel tape in
1972 of which ‘Heathen Woman’ is the standout – the classic tale
of a relationship gone biblically sour.

Julian’s Treatment were formed in late 1960s London, at the tail-end of the psychedelic era, which morphed into the early progressive rock scene. Band leader Julian Jay Savarin, of French/Mayan descent, left Dominica in the early 60s to study law in the UK. His fascination with space and aviation led him to join the R.A.F. before immersing himself in London’s exciting underground music scene.

The cosmically enhanced debut (double concept) album by Julian’s Treatment, titled: A Time Before This, was released in 1970 and has gone on to be a cult classic of the era. As Julian turned his talents toward becoming a prolific Science Fiction writer, Julian’s Treatment stepped away from the live arena. As a result they became a studio band with new members, including the enigmatic (former Catapilla) vocalist ‘Lady Jo Meek’. A second album was recorded with this new line-up, as a companion to Julian’s first book: Waiters On The Dance, being published in 1972. The album, of the same name was released in early 1973.

Since then, Julian went on to have an impressive volume of acclaimed books published in his name, though nothing has been heard of him musically. Little did we all know that a follow-up album to Waiters On the Dance had been recorded in 1974 but, for whatever reason, it has never seen the light of day, until now!

Beyond The Outer Mirr is, undoubtedly a holy grail from the golden era of early progressive rock. Vocalist, Lady Jo Meek, puts in an incredible performance which will leave listeners stunned.

Our mission was to pull together the heaviest, nastiest sounding unreleased recordings by the most obscure UK bands we could track down, after seeing their names listed in the back-pages of 1970s music weeklies, old flyers, posters, fanzines, thanks lists, wherever. With often just a name to go on, we spent hundreds of hours (often fruitlessly) trying to track down likely candidates.

Of course, finding the bands was often only the start, as to get a useable track relied upon a kindly band member trusting their unique artefacts to a crazy record label they barely knew. Even after this, many of the acetates required microscopic surgery to fix an annoying skip, and all the reel-to-reel tapes used required careful baking to avert the dreaded ‘sticky-shed syndrome’. Still, we think the results speak for themselves: ‘Yeah Man, It’s Bloody Heavy’ is simply the coolest, most unique and uncompromising collection of heavy UK nuggets ever to be released.

But we’re not done yet, as this is just the first volume of a major new series. And remember, sons and daughters of the mighty Sabbath: always keep it BLOODY HEAVY!!
