Somewhere along the line while messing around on the audio software we overlayed the banjo intro onto the punk strumming, and it just worked perfectly… Pete and Galen looked at each other like it was an epiphany.

The song writing process for this song was quite unique. Galen wanted to make a song that used the ‘well-known’ punk strumming used in various forms by The Offspring, Millencolin & Alexisonfire. He says that after that, the guitar parts for the verse and chorus wrote themselves. Pete then moved to writing a banjo riff and came up with the catchy running intro piece inspired by a lot of bluegrass stuff he’s been devouring recently that immediately became the beginning of the song.

Behind the lyrics for Crows Foot:

The melody and lyrics were originally much slower and were written about the punk scene in the late 90s and early 2000s until Pete said to Galen, “The lyrics and melody are nice, but the second verse may need some adjusting. And while you’re adjusting the second verse, maybe rewrite the 1st and third. Also, the chorus lacks a bit of energy.” This was during Covid lockdown at a time when the world stood still and there wasn’t much else to do…. its a moment we all still chuckle about 🙂

So, Galen started with a blank piece of paper. The new first line – “No single use plastics, I want fuller lips now, click and you collect, can’t wait I need this now” is about the juxtaposition of elements of society that seem to be opposite. There is a much-needed global drive to use less plastic, then people put “plastic” in their lips, but everything is urgent and needed right away. It’s just odd. The lyrics for “Crows Foot” circle round these ideas today which can be summed up as either the necessity for instant gratification and/or other forms of almost hypocrisy.

Lyrics for Crows Foot:

No single use plastic I want fuller lips now. Click and you collect (can’t wait I need this now!). Tear open the box to get your Instagram ass. You want it now, can’t wait to see inside. While you break down the laws of grieving time. You want it now. Your cellphone said you needed it. I’m on my knees I bow to you. So I’m swiping right and I’m on the prowl now. Lovely to be meeting you (conversation has gone too long!). I’ll open the door for you to fame and fortune. I only eat fruit I only eat meat. Podcasts fill my senses (wash up or dirt will kill!). Inject that crows foot, it’s getting out of hand.

The West Coast Wolves are a 5-piece ensemble boasting a heady compound of rock and roll, alt folk, dark country and surf rock. With strong connections to the ocean & Kreef gods of Southern Africa’s diabolical west coast the wolves draw their inspiration from the Weskus, fireside jam sessions, banjos, chilled quarts, and the icy surf. Excited as they were with their emerging following, the Wolves never anticipated the ground swell they found after the release of their debut EP “Hold The Wheel” (followed by fan favourite singles “The City” and ”Uncle Tin”). Forced into lockdown as a result of the global pandemic the Wolves regrouped to focus on wood shopping and recording new material for their eagerly awaited debut album.

The video for Billy McKreef is a behind-the-scenes look at the writing & recording of the songs from ‘Don’t Forget to Howl’, which started just before the covid pandemic erupted, and continued right through the successive lock-downs. It captures the first few shows that the Wolves played when things began to open up again, from intimate warm-up shows to a street festival in Cape Town. All the footage is real and shot at the right place and the right time, shown in the sequence it all unfolded. The Wolves decided it would be ideal to tell the story with the Billy McKreef video because it was the blueprint for ‘Don’t Forget to Howl’.

Billy McKreef was written at the time that Pete picked up the 5-string banjo, right after Larry joined the Wolves on the drums. It was a head-on collision of different genres which resulted in a sonic explosion of folk-rock, west coast banjo and surf-punk with a bouncy hip-hop groove.

The reference to “Protect the West Coast’ is a connection to the Wolves support for the civic campaign to stop commercial mining programs that threaten to destroy the ecology and culture of South Africa’s west coast.
