10 Years Of 'Mysterious Phonk: Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp' SpaceGhostPurrp

4AD are teaming up with Vinyl Me, Please to celebrate the 10th anniversary of SpaceGhostPurrp’s highly influential album Mysterious Phonk: Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp.

From Miami, SpaceGhostPurrp came to the fore in the late-noughties with mixtapes of woozy, dark, 90s inspired rap (including 2011’s now-infamous Blackland Radio 6.6).  He also founded one of the first internet rap collectives of its kind, The Raider Klan, who The Guardian in 2012 named alongside Black Hippy, Odd Future, Pro Era and Taylor Gang as being at the forefront of the comeback of rap crews.  And while his music set the tone for what followed, his only wearing black and pioneering use of hieroglyphics also proved prescient.  While reappraising his work in 2018, Genius said “his influence on today’s rap scene was undeniable.”

Released 10 years ago this week, his debut studio album Mysterious Phonk: Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp caught a moment.  An album without guests and a backdrop of intoxicating syrup-rich beats, it excitingly brought high-fidelity to tracks that had previously lived on mixtapes and strewn across YouTube and SoundCloud, as well as introducing some new tracks to the listener.  Worlds collided too with it being released on 4AD, something that made sense to Pitchfork, saying he shared “the same qualities that have defined 4AD’s roster since the beginning: mesmerising use of reverb and negative space, hooks derived from the phonetic and rhythmic qualities of words rather than their meaning, constructions of alternate realities.”

Out of print on vinyl since its release and now highly collectible, Vinyl Me, Please are delighted to be bringing Mysterious Phonk: Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp back for its 10th anniversary with a special one-off, numbered double coloured vinyl pressing.  Shipping in mid-August, it’s available to pre-order now here (non-VMP members will be able to order their copies from Friday June 10th).
