Recorded over the course of a year, ‘warlock’ features a potent mixture of deftly cut breaks and warbling melodies and snatches of strange samples uncovered in the depths of grungemaster’s audio library.
‘Warlock’ has soundtracked the depraved evenings of whoever will offer grungemaster food and lodging. Refined over railway travels and recorded in part, on a 1997 Blackberry, grungemaster’s new album defies categorisation.
The album opens with the speaker-destroying “ctrl redux”, a warped combination of tape distorted bass and spidery synth leads, before launching into the track list proper.
Throughout, the album defies categorisation, veering between driving drum and bass and washed out thrift-store keyboard lines, high-tempo IDM breakbeats and soaring, near ambient synths. Mysterious and yet oddly nostalgic, ‘warlock’ is not to be missed.
