Astral Fungus Cult’s eponymous EP is a one way ticket into the bizarre realm of psychic cult leaders, secret rituals, mind bending mushrooms and space age nostalgia. The album fuses multiple sonic worlds into one dreamy reality, drawing inspiration from the doom giants (Type O Negative, Electric Wizard, Monolord), as well as gothic classics (The Cure, Dead Can Dance) and experimental electronica (Tangerine Dream). While the old world collapses and mystery bleeds into reality, the Temple of Astral Fungus stands strong. Unapologetic riffsploitation is the name of the game. Deep resonating bass grooves and unyielding drums are the foundation from which this Church of Astral Fungus is built. Layer by layer, the rows of devious guitars and gritty textures go up to form an impenetrable wall of sound. Any remaining gaps are tightly sealed with a thick slurry of synthesized landscapes and eerie leads.
