Loud Music for Quiet People (an anagram of ‘milk of quick fat Pope’) is the latest album from Twelve Point Buck, a band who put the ‘No thank you’ in ‘What can we do to promote you guys?’

Twelve Point Buck make noisy songs for subdued individuals, an album title suggestion of mine which they politely declined before choosing one that’s virtually identical, and the only reasons I haven’t confronted them about that obvious act of theft are because a) they are such lovely, kind human beings b) whose music sounds like it wants to eviscerate my children with dirty fangs.

The members of TPB (Dad on guitar and vocals, Mum on bass synth/samples/vocals, Yael on drums and Cal on guitar with four strings, and additional drumming courtesy of Willis) were in no rush to push this one out. Things are ready when they’re ready, and if it’s for you, you’ll find it. The season is a clean white towel, unsoiled, and their knees have never been healthier thankyouforasking.

The music itself is sometimes loud like crying and at other times quiet, like crying. If the Pixies, Neutral Milk Hotel and Kyuss melted into one another in some sort of Cronenberg incident, it would sound like Twelve Point Buck, but if someone referred to the hideously mangled members of Pixyuss Milk by way of comparison, you would get what they were aiming at. Kids these days talk a lot about 90s revival and authenticity; well, this band hits the first mark stylistically and the second by being too cheap to buy fully functional recording equiptment. Twelve Point Buck is very much a “DIY and see what happens” sort of sound, but hopefully more like a ‘devoted savant’ such as ‘Wesley Willis’ for example (Rock and Roll McDonalds ‘til I die).

If you’re looking for an introduction to the sound of Loud Music for Quiet People, you might want to start with opener ‘Daylight.’ While you’re at it, you might want to watch the first ten minutes of Citizen Kane and read half of Chapter One of Ulysses. With all respect to the Ramones, Twelve Point Buck have written multiple songs. That’s not a snake you’re touching, bro. It’s an elephant.

You’re going to listen to this and think “Oh, I get it,” and then you’ll try to explain it to a colleague and all you’ll get are some buzz words like ‘loud’, ‘fuzzy’ and ‘have you ever put your head in an engine bay?’ It’s fun, it’s big. This music is like watching a metalhead eating one of those swirly lollipops – you nudge the person next to you; they clock it; and the world doesn’t feel so ichorous for a while.

When the end comes – not today, don’t worry – some band will be the last band you listened to before you died. May as well be this one.
