Wolkberg makes music for the pure joy of it. It is only music that can adequately resolve the conflict of reason and emotion. Where language falls short, music animates the experience of the sublime. This is the experience that we strive for when we make music.
Clouds inspire the image in which we create. The constant evolution of their shapes and forms guide our approach to the creative process. We evolve as we create. Clouds are a passing reminder of creation as the change that constantly takes shape.
Wolkberg is a two-piece instrumental band from Pretoria, South Africa. We’ve named ourselves in our native tongue, Afrikaans. Wolkberg means ‘Cloud Mountain’ and is also a mountain range in the Limpopo province, but to us denotes the epic cloud formations that form in the South African highveld. The name was initially inspired by the paintings of the artist J.H. Pierneef. This aesthetic inspiration led us to the contemporary artist, MJ Lourens, who collaborated with us to paint our album cover.
Our self-titled debut was recorded over four days in November 2019. It is the culmination of three years of improvised jam sessions that gradually took shape in the form of compositions. We wanted to translate our experiences in the jam room and stuck with a raw instrumental recording consisting of drums and only one guitar tracked over four amplifiers. The spaces left open by the lack of other instruments seem to be spontaneously filled in by the listener, hearing what is not there. Apparently similar to the forms that we tend to see in the clouds that float by.
