21-year old Dutch artist Ellen Maria is based in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Ever since she was very young, writing music was like writing a diary. With songs about anxiety, depression, and trauma, but also; self-love, independence and recovery, Ellen tries to bring light to day-to-day relatable subjects or subjects that aren’t talked about enough. With her debut single ‘To Be Scared’ she sets the tone for her upcoming EP at the end of 2021. Taking inspiration from artists like Madison Beer, Nothing But Thieves, UPSAHL and FLETCHER, Ellen Maria’s music is described as pop, dance and alternative pop with rock influences.
“To Be Scared is a song about feeling anxious. I’ve dealt with anxiety my entire life, and I know I’m not the only one. It can be hard to explain what anxiety feels like and how it affects your life. Songwriting has always been a way for me to express my feelings and find the right words. I’m sure many people used to be scared of monsters in their closets, or couldn’t get a good night sleep after watching a scary movie. To me, anxiety gives me the same feeling, but with everyday situations. With this song I wanted to give people a glimpse of what it feels like to live with this feeling.”
