New Video for 'Won One' Out Now Tkay Maidza

Today, Tkay Maidza releases an avant garde video for recently released single Won One’, that sees her at one with the elements, directed and produced by Munachi. The single is a slinky, razor-sharp track produced by Stint that addresses Tkay’s experiences with misogyny in the music industry. The excoriating but high-minded song draws connections between the men who try to control women’s careers and those who do women the world over wrong every day. It plays like an exorcism, channelling all the apathy and animosity she felt towards music industry chauvinism.

With the video release, Tkay announces her first extensive headline North American tour that kicks off on 8 February 2024 in Seattle. Tickets are available for pre-sale from today and general sale from Friday 8 December. The tour follows support slots for Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Flume and a play at Pitchfork Paris, as well as the release of Tkay’s new album Sweet Justice that arrived last month to a slate of critical praise from NME, The Guardian, DIY, NY Times, Pitchfork and more.

Sweet Justice features collaborations with Lolo Zouaï, Amber Mark, Duckwrth, Flume and Kaytranada and is the second album from the Zimbabwean-born, Australian-raised, Los Angeles-based rapper, singer and producer, and the first female rapper signed to 4AD. The album was born out of a profound sense of karma as she steps away from toxic figures in her life – it’s a coming-of-age record about accountability that’s bright, breezy, freewheeling and fun, and hears her harnessing the feminine power that was inside her all along.

Sweet Justice follows the 3-year-long, 24 song-strong genre-bending Last Year Was Weird trilogy exploring Maidza’s own African-Australian experience. The project earned her a 2021 ARIA Awards win for Best Soul/R&B Release and an NME Award for Best Solo Act from Australia in 2022.
