Greek Stoner/Heavy Rock band Planet Of Zeus
“The Beast Within” from the album
“Vigilante” (April 2014)
Planet of Zeus are a heavy rock, southern metal band from Athens, Greece. They were formed in 2000 and since then have extensively toured around Greece, playing in every venue possible, ranging from shitholes to stadiums. Their raw , sincere and constantly evolving live performances have secured them a loyal and hardcore underground following base, which exceeds Greece’s geographical boarders and has led them to sharing the stage with acts like Hermano and Brant Bjork, Monster Magnet,Karma to Burn, Eyehategod, Church of Misery. Their highly successful 2011 Greek tour, which included all Greek major cities, their participation in the Stoned from the Underground Festival in Germany and their cult music videos led to this year’s sold out Planet of Zeus’s Athenian concert. A concert which took place in front of an 800 people audience.
Planet of Zeus have released two albums. “Eleven the hard way”, in April 2008 through Casket Music/ Copro Records (UK) and “Macho Libre”, in May 2011, through B-Otherside Records. Both albums have sold-out and are waiting to be rereleased. Planet of Zeus’s songs have been also featured in several underground compilations such as the Spinalonga vol. 1&2. Both albums have received attention and reviews beyond expectation.
“…this thrusting, snarling trio has all the menace and power of a haulage vehicle rolling downhill with no breaks… but who needs a brain, when your face is melting?” ..Kerrang Magazine (KKK)
“…Fuzzy and dense-sounding, and with a set of effect pedals that sound like they came out of the 70s, they tip their hat to Sabbath on the excellent Space Loop 430, but are equally adept at sounding doomed, bluesy and broke on the crawling Stab ME” ..Metal Hammer UK (7/10)
“…many dudes overseas would give their moustache to have composed some of their riffs”..Metal Hammer GR (8/10)
“…a trio of hairy-assed stoners…indeed” ..Bruce Dickinson (Friday Rock [email protected] BBC’s 6music radio)
“All in all you’re getting one of the heaviest albums I’ve heard in a long time that isn’t a doom or drone album. Rough and gruffy vocals and some of the best finely tuned instruments round off Planet of Zeus’ sophomore release….Hold onto your hats though, you’re about to be taken for a ride.” (thesodashop.wordpress.com)
“Macho Libre is utterly riddled with quality riff after riff and it certainly doesn’t hurt that their vocalist Babis has one of best stoner rock/southern metal voices you’ll ever hear.” (ridewiththedevil.blogspot.com)
“Greece will no longer extract thoughts of gyros, solipsism, or the Parthenon’s Doric columns. I’ll now think of hollow, distant guitar pleas for Ronnie Van Zant’s resurrection. Southern heroes have plenty to be proud of on Macho Libre. They might even get a little jealous. This stuff is thick, deep-fried, and indulgent.” (www.heavyplanet.net)
“..you could let the groove flow in your blood, you could count how many biblical riffs could fit in an album and how many of them Clutch and Corrosion of Conformity would be jealous of…” (Metal Hammer, Greece)
Much of “Macho Libre’s” success is due to the fact that it contains 11 songs, which draw inspiration from the current social and economic crisis in Greece and express frustration, anger and thirst for revenge.
This year Planet of Zeus are planning their spring European tour, their summer European Festival appearances, already confirmed for Rockwave festival, Athens with Paradise Lost, Machine Head and Black Sabbath, and are currently writing songs for their third album.
