The name of SIGNUM DRACONIS alludes to The Order of the Dragon (Latin: Societas Draconistarum). Its statutes call it a society whose members carry the Signum Draconis. It was a monarchical chivalric order only for selected higher aristocracy and monarchs. Founded in 1408 by Sigismund of Luxembourg, who was then King of Hungary and Croatia and later became Holy Roman Emperor. It was fashioned after the military orders of the Crusades, requiring its initiates to defend the cross and fight the enemies of Christianity. Between 1408 and 1437 the Order of the Dragon was the most important political institution of noble origin in Hungary (and Croatia, since it was within the borders of the kingdom). The Order flourished during the first half of the 15th century, primarily in the areas of influence of the political strategies of Sigismund: Bohemia, Hungary, Poland, Principalities of Arbëria (current Albania), Wallachia (current Romania) and others. It later spread to Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain but after the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, it continued to play an important role in Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Albania. The Prince of Wallachia, Vlad II Dracul, took his name from the Order of the Dragon and was the father of Vlad III ‘The Impaler,’ who became one of the most notorious members of this order—his infamy due in part to the great success of the novel ‘Dracula’ by Bram Stoker. But beyond the legends and vampire stories Vlad III Dracul is considered a national hero. The interest in this mysterious order of knights and its members continues today.
