SILENT TOMBS are a Mexican #doom #death #metal band, founded in late 2016 in the city of Colima. Melodic and melancholic, they invoke the abyss and sob pain in every note. Their sound is based on the primitive lineage of doom from the 1990s and early 2000s, with chaotic and depressing passages that traverse scenes from infinite misfortune to the deepest darkness of the abyss.
SILENT TOMBS are made up of musicians from across various projects in the Mexican extreme music scene, such as Demonic Manifestation, Ravenous Death, Noxifer, Altumtenebris, and Wolves among others. Initially composed of Enrique Martínez Fray on lead guitar, Arturo Delgado on vocals, Javier Torres on bass, Victor Mercado on rhythm guitar, and Felipe González on drums, they released the EP The Slipping Away of All Hope in early 2018. Thereafter, the lineup underwent some changes, with Enrique Martínez and Arturo Delgado currently handling guitars, Mauricio González joining on bass, Felipe González remaining on drums, and Victor Mercado moving to vocals.
With this lineup now solidified, at long last do SILENT TOMBS ready their first full-length. Accurately titled Mourning Hymns From Beyond, their debut album is an ode to darkness itself: 11 tracks across 55 minutes filled with agonizing rage, lethargic melancholy, and DEATH. Here, SILENT TOMBS possess the uncanny ability to invoke incredible melancholy whilst moving with energy – at any pace. True, much of these Mourning Hymns move at a funereal march, but more often than not, that pace picks up and crushing gallops of sadness thunder forth. Melody remains a focal point, as each riff wrenches (tuneful) despair from the abyss, and the deathly vocals sound suitably emotive. No more but definitely no less, this is all caps DOOM-DEATH highly recommended for maniacs of early Anathema, Paradise Lost, and My Dying Bride as well as Daylight Dies, Swallow the Sun, and PERSONAL RECORDS flagship band MAJESTIC DOWNFALL: solemnly sing these Mourning Hymns From Beyond!
