Bob Balch here. When I started writing originals for the SLOWER record “Rage And Ruin” I still wanted it to sound as if we tuned thrash riffs to B standard and then slowed them down. The intro riff to “Hellfire” has a Slayer shape to it for sure. Then I thrown in some dissonance chords and a descending line during the chorus which is a nod to the Slayer song “Spill The Blood.” Because I teach guitar online I’m always over analyzing riffs and looking at them from a theory standpoint. I guess that’s useful in this regard. The other riffs in the tune were written from a longer jam against a 20 min drum beat. I would just improvise riffs and then go back into the session and cut out the fat and keep the riffs that stuck out to me. I find that song writing process to be productive. Then you add Amy’s bass and vocal perfection and Esben’s hook filled drum parts and you’ve got the SLOWER sound. It’s been fun crafting these songs with them because as we were writing, our sound came into focus. Almost like we were hearing the band for the first time.
Amy Tung Barrysmith here. When we started writing originals, I wanted to try to keep to the same themes that Slayer wrote about. There are a lot of songs about war in Slayer’s songs and when I heard the Hellfire riff, the first image that came to mind was just this bright red fire raining down from the heavens. With all of the upheaval in the world today, it seemed like a fitting topic. What makes this song slightly unique, though, is that I came up with the title, Hellfire, first from that initial image I had in my head. Writing the lyrics after that was easy.
