Conceptually, ‘Not Enough’ serves as the emotional climax of the album. The record unfolds as a conceptual narrative following a character left comatose after being hit by a car and this track represents a critical battle within the protagonist’s mind. Fully aware he is in a coma, the character reflects on his life and decides whether it is worth waking up. Supposing his family and lover have moved on, he considers staying in the bliss of the coma world where everything is easy.
The full album, Gathering Dust, follows this character across both reality and the imaginary “coma-land,” focusing on themes of death, letting go and the space in between. The band intentionally left the story’s conclusion open to interpretation, allowing listeners to decide whether the protagonist wakes up or remains in the comfort blanket of his suspended existence. Even the album’s title ‘Gathering Dust’ carries a bittersweet weight. Goodall explains:
“Well, it started as a joke because we recorded the album quite some time ago, and unfortunately due to two of us having some serious health issues last year we postponed the release, leaving it on a back shelf gathering dust, so it just felt right.”
