Submersion Records is happy to announce its 7th release, a full length album by Yiannis Iliakis, a multi instrumentalist from Athens, Greece.
Yanni’s main instrument is the drums where he has extensive experience and degrees from esteemed music schools. Yiannis has been a student of and followed seminars by teachers of international status and has also acquired a degree in arts.
As a member of various bands and collaborations, he has a wide ranging discography including folk music, experimental black metal and free jazz. He has played with musicians from all around the world and has released albums with bands like Outward Bound – the trio he put together and released 2 albums, Strovili, a band fusing traditional Greek music with jazz and Ciccada, the progressive rock group he joined in 2011.
Vertical Horizon is an album where ambient music meets atmospheric soundscapes. A variety of instruments such as drums, percussion, synthesizers, electronics, sampling, recorders, guitars and flute are utilised resulting in multi layered compositions that slowly draw the listener in to experience the wealth of musical moments this work has to offer. Headphones are strongly recommended, as the listener experiences a movie playing in their head while listening to the album that includes elements of futuristic soundtracks.
Sections of the album see Yanni’s influences of Brian Eno, Tim Hecker and Biosphere blend in with his drum playing resulting in intricate rhythmic patterns that hold together the more abstract sonic experimentations. Long, spiraling tracks unfold slowly, building up a musical exploration, inviting the listener to take part in the journey.
