Duende en la Penumbra is a blackened forest folk meets djent act from the cultural melting pot that is New York City. Steeped in erudition and seeking to fuse elements of a diverse set of genres the project is ambitious in scope. It’s rare after all that you find a group of teenagers citing the Van Gogh brothers or Gabriel Aresti as their spiritual influences. Going far deeper than many of their peers in the world of both pagan music and extreme metal, Duende en la Penumbra use their wellspring of literary references to fuel a unique soundworld.

The group initialy formed for a high school battle of the bands where they played a cover set of Nebelung and Sangre de Muerdago songs. Their positive reception led to the band recording their demo, Riparian Gloom over the course of a single evening. Duende en la Peumbra sought to create their own take on their diverse set of inspirations. This quickly led to a performance on WNYU and then a spot opening for Dzö-Nga. Now, Duende en la Penumbra are determined to tread in the footsteps of their musical ancestors, bands like Agalloch, Alcest and Uaral, in a quest for sonic transcendence.
With the first single from the bands upcoming record, That Same Evergreen I Love So Well, Despite the Way its Shadows Make Me Sad, out now the band are gearing up for their first live performances. With multiple new releases just over the horizon, Duende en la Penumbra are clearly here to stay. Their unique blend of influences promises for a unique musical evolution as they continue to grow as artists. Though the band may have just started out they have spent years individually honing their talents to create something they feel reflects their souls. Now is their time to rise.
