The People’s Love Cult are veterans of the Florida music scene, successfully managing to form a small list of venues which refuse to let them play. The band formed in 2015, and boasts to be “the first band that is also a religion.” I was first contacted by the bands leader Mr Pope in early January, and I knew from our first exchanges that I had stumbled upon something incredible. Mr Pope runs his own record label SUN GOD RECORDS where he posts his own music and the music of his peers, keeping the DIY ethos alive.

“Chanting mantras and calling people to join in and rid themselves of subliminal oppression. Recording several albums per year, letting the gigs get out of control and all in all resurrecting the spirit of rock and roll, baby.” – Nikola Bundanovic

A small booklet of stories from the band, written by Nikola Bundanovic, is also included in the download of this release. The stories are contained on the bands website “The Book of Fraud – https://peopleslovecult.wordpress.com” and have been compiled and edited to produce an interesting narrative which sums up the bands antics and struggles. The extracts are extremely well written and funny; the story of the bands attempt to film a music video on a prestigious golf course, still makes me smile.

Hualun (花伦), an experimental / ambient rock band from Wuhan, China, formed nearly 15 years ago. Their music is characterised by repeating guitar loops and improvised synthesizer, creating unique and dense soundscapes which convey complex emotion.

Normality – or that which we used to consider “normal” – seems like a distant memory at the moment, with the advent of lock-down in the UK, in the fight against coronavirus. I have read a number of heart-warming stories over the past few weeks: the nation taking to the streets to clap the brave NHS workers battling the virus on the front lines; communities going above and beyond to help each other in the face of adversity; bandcamp agreeing to waive their fee for struggling independent artists. I feel privileged to be able to add my own, heart-warming story to this list…

It is an honour to introduce, Hualun. I was first contacted by the band in February, whilst they were trapped in isolation. Having been stuck at home for the preceding month, they reached out with the purpose of creating a cassette for the fifth installment in their experimental, ambient series: “wʌndərlænd”. At that stage, the prospect of isolation or lock-down was completely unknown here in the UK, but the band themselves were in the eye of the storm. They sent me this message, from Wuhan, on 1st March:

“Please pay attention to your safety and prepare masks. Peace to you”.

For them to reach out in such a way, and with such empathy, gave me an instant connection with the band. Just as the members were able to strike a chord with me, so too has their music with many other people.

“Silently” and “No Signal In This City”, are both set to appear in a new film (“244”) by German director, Luis Schubert, who has clearly recognised the emotional qualities of their sound. This film is set for release in the autumn of 2020.

The band found their big break in 2018 when they were asked to score the music of the film “An Elephant Sitting Still”. It was the first and last film from the Chinese novelist and director, Hu Bo; and it found great critical success, winning the audience choice award at numerous different film festivals.

Jack is the lead singer and songwriter for the band Cosmic Lightshow. However, recently he has begun to focus on creating dream-like landscapes from his bedroom in Wiltshire.

Influenced by the driving bass lines of Peter Hook (Joy Division and New Order) and the guitar work of Robert Smith (The Cure), the title track provides a post-punk energy which drives the song forward. With an accompanying music video, filmed in isolation, composed of psychedelic visuals of the Wiltshire countryside.

A striking music video has also been created by Archie for this song. Contrasting bright washed out visuals with stark black and white imagery of his surrounding area in Wiltshire. Showing brightness and warmth can be found anywhere in these challenging times.

Following the success of the cassettes of Wʌndərlænd +5 on the label, we have worked with Hualun to create double the quantity, with a noticeable increase in psychical production quality.

Wʌndərlænd +7 is the last in the series of E.P.s created by the band between 2018 and 2019. Capturing moments in time, their E.P.s have been recorded at their home in Shenzehn, occasionally mere hours after inspiration has struck.

Creating mesmerizing and immersive soundscapes is Hualun’s specialty and this release is no exception. While noticeably lighter and sunnier than much of their previous work, wʌndərlænd +7 warrants deeper introspection into the listener’s thoughts and emotion.

Finally Free is the third and final single from Archie Sager’s debut album. It represents the largest sound out of the three tracks and describes the feeling of floating aimlessly through life, but with a hint of purpose escalating towards the end of the track. The music video gives the track new meaning, with stock footage from the Apollo launches overlaid on top of each other to create a retro, celestial atmosphere.

Björn Falk’s double sided E.P. calls back to a by gone era of indie and garage that simultaneously sounds familiar and fresh. Complete with artwork emulating a 7″ vinyl, it could have been plucked straight from the 60s.

Adam is better known for playing bass in Swedish indie rock band “Hater” but is debut album under the name Agacy, shows his skills stretch endlessly across 11 tracks (with a new bonus track included.) It winds its way between indie rock and pop music with a dreamy sentiment kept throughout. Yet, the album still retains dance-able moments with hints of ABBA sprinkled in.

“The Space Between Our Lips” is a ten track collection of emotional and solid post-punk inspired pop. All songs are recorded and mixed in a home studio and they are mastered by Joakim Lindberg at Studio Sickan. The music is often based on simple synth pads and coloured by echoing rock guitars and straight-forward drum loops.” – Adam
